What Is Tooth Soap? The Natural, Fluoride-Free Toothpaste Alternative
By the Weluxia Team · Updated April 2026 · 9 min read
Tooth soap is a natural, fluoride free alternative to conventional toothpaste, made by saponifying plant based oils — typically olive oil and coconut oil — to produce a gentle cleanser for the teeth and gums. Unlike conventional toothpaste, tooth soap contains no sodium lauryl sulphate, no glycerin, no synthetic foaming agents, and no artificial preservatives. It is sold as a liquid drop formula or a solid bar and is used in place of toothpaste as part of a daily oral care routine.
At Weluxia, we formulate our own tooth soap drops in the UK using four ingredients: saponified olive oil, saponified coconut oil, distilled water, and natural essential oil. This article covers everything you need to know about tooth soap — how it works, how it compares to toothpaste, who it suits, and what to look for when choosing one.
How does tooth soap work?
To understand how tooth soap cleans your teeth, it helps to understand saponification. When a plant oil such as olive oil or coconut oil is combined with an alkali like potassium hydroxide, a chemical reaction converts the oil into soap. The result is a compound with a split personality: one end of each soap molecule is attracted to water (hydrophilic), and the other is attracted to oils and fats (lipophilic).
This structure is what makes soap effective as a cleanser. The lipophilic end attaches to oily residues, food particles, and plaque causing debris on your tooth surfaces. The hydrophilic end then pulls the whole assembly away when you rinse. Your teeth are cleaned through the chemistry of the molecule, not through abrasion or synthetic detergents.
Tooth soap made from olive oil produces potassium olivate. Tooth soap made from coconut oil produces potassium cocoate. Both are plant derived cleansing agents that are well tolerated by most mouths, including sensitive ones.
Tooth soap vs toothpaste: what is the difference?
Conventional toothpaste is a complex formulation containing anywhere from 15 to 30 ingredients. The active cleansing ingredient is usually sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), a synthetic detergent responsible for the foaming action most people associate with brushing. Alongside SLS, a standard toothpaste tube typically contains fluoride, glycerin, humectants, thickeners, preservatives, artificial flavouring, colouring agents, and pH buffers.
Of those ingredients, only a small number do the actual cleaning work. The rest exist to create the sensory experience — the foam, the texture, the taste — that we have been conditioned over decades to associate with cleanliness.
Tooth soap replaces the entire synthetic formula with saponified plant oils. The differences that matter most are:
- No SLS. Sodium lauryl sulphate is the most commonly cited cause of recurrent mouth ulcers in people who are sensitive to it. Tooth soap contains none.
- No glycerin. Glycerin is used in toothpaste as a humectant and Texturising agent. Some natural oral care practitioners suggest it leaves a film on enamel. Tooth soap contains none.
- No synthetic foam. Tooth soap produces little to no foam. The absence of foam does not affect cleaning efficacy — it simply reflects the absence of SLS.
- No fluoride. Tooth soap is fluoride free. This is intentional for people who prefer to avoid it, but worth understanding clearly — see the fluoride section below.
- A shorter ingredient list. Weluxia Tooth Soap Drops contain four ingredients. The average tube of conventional toothpaste contains significantly more.
What are the benefits of using tooth soap?
Fewer mouth ulcers. For people sensitive to SLS, removing it from their oral care routine is often the most meaningful change they can make. Many people who switch to an SLS free formula report a reduction in the frequency of mouth ulcers.
Gentler on sensitive gums. The plant based oils in tooth soap — particularly potassium olivate from olive oil — cleanse without the stripping or irritation that synthetic detergents can cause in some individuals. If you have sensitive teeth or gums specifically, read our dedicated guide: Tooth Soap for Sensitive Teeth.
A cleaner, more transparent ingredient profile. For those who prefer to know exactly what they are putting in their mouths, tooth soap offers a short, fully disclosed ingredient list with nothing requiring a chemistry degree to understand.
Vegan and cruelty free. Tooth soap made from plant oils contains no animal derived ingredients and requires no animal testing.
Less packaging waste. A glass bottle of liquid tooth soap drops, used two drops at a time, generates considerably less plastic waste than the equivalent number of toothpaste tubes.
Is tooth soap safe? Is dental soap good for you?
Tooth soap made from food grade saponified plant oils is safe for daily oral use. The saponification process converts the original oils into potassium olivate or potassium cocoate, both of which are widely used in personal care formulations and well tolerated by the body. Weluxia Tooth Soap Drops are made without parabens, SLS, artificial fragrances, synthetic preservatives, or dyes.

What tooth soap does not do is replace professional dental care. It cleanses effectively, but it is not a substitute for regular checkups, flossing, or professional cleaning. If you have active dental conditions such as gum disease, decay, or enamel erosion, speak with your dentist before changing your oral care routine.
What about fluoride? Does tooth soap contain it?
Tooth soap does not contain fluoride. The established dental position is that fluoride strengthens enamel and helps prevent decay. If you are considering a fluoride free oral care product, this is the most important thing to discuss with your dentist, particularly if you have children, a history of cavities, or live in an area with low fluoride in the water supply.
People who choose fluoride free tooth soap typically do so because they prefer to minimise additives in their oral care routine, or because they use other remineralisation methods alongside brushing. That is a valid personal choice, but one best made with your dentist's input.
Is tooth soap suitable for sensitive teeth and gums?
For many people with sensitive mouths, tooth soap is a gentler option than conventional toothpaste. The most common triggers of toothpaste sensitivity are SLS and strong artificial mint flavours. Tooth soap contains neither. Weluxia Tooth Soap Drops use pure cinnamon or peppermint essential oil rather than synthetic flavour compounds, at concentrations that provide flavour without causing discomfort in reactive mouths.
We have written a full guide to this topic if sensitivity is your main concern: Tooth Soap for Sensitive Teeth and Gums.
Does tooth soap contain minerals?
No. Tooth soap is formulated for cleansing, not mineralisation. The four ingredient formula lifts residues from the tooth surface — it does not add minerals back. For targeted mineral support, a mineral toothpaste can complement tooth soap use. Weluxia's mineral toothpaste range is designed to work alongside our tooth soap for those who want the benefits of both approaches.
How do you use tooth soap correctly?
Wet your toothbrush, add two drops of Weluxia Tooth Soap onto the bristles, and brush all tooth surfaces for two minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Use morning and evening for best results. Compatible with both manual and electric toothbrushes. No additional toothpaste is needed.
Two things worth knowing when switching from conventional toothpaste. First, the lack of foam is normal and does not mean the product is not working. Second, the flavour is subtler than synthetic mint. Both take roughly a week to adjust to.
How long does a bottle of tooth soap last?
A 50ml bottle of Weluxia Tooth Soap Drops lasts approximately four to six weeks with twice daily use at two drops per brush. That equates to roughly 60 to 80 brushing sessions per bottle. The precision dropper dispenses exactly what is needed, with no waste.
What to look for when choosing a tooth soap
The ingredient list should be short and disclosed in full INCI format. The base should be saponified olive oil (potassium olivate), saponified coconut oil (potassium cocoate), or both. Flavouring should come from natural essential oils rather than synthetic compounds. The product should be clearly free from SLS, glycerin, parabens, artificial colours, and synthetic preservatives. Liquid drop formats with a dropper offer the most precise dosing and the cleanest storage.
A note from Weluxia
We developed Weluxia Tooth Soap Drops because we could not find a liquid tooth soap in the UK that met our own standards for ingredients, format, and flavour. The result is a four ingredient formula made in the UK, available in Cinnamon and Mint, in a glass bottle with a precision dropper.
We are not anti-toothpaste, and we are not making health claims beyond what is supportable. What we can say from direct experience of formulating and using our product is that for the growing number of people who want a cleaner oral care routine, tooth soap is a serious and workable alternative to conventional toothpaste.
