LUSTRE PEARL POWDER
Levigated Japanese Seawater Pearl | Skin, Teeth & Supplement
Most pearl powders are made from mass farmed freshwater pearls. Lustre is not. We source exclusively from Japanese saltwater pearls, cultivated in the open ocean where nacre builds slowly and densely. Our pearls are then levigated, a traditional water milling process that produces an ultra fine powder with no grittiness. The result is 100% pure pearl powder, naturally rich in calcium, conchiolin and over 30 trace minerals, with no fillers, synthetics or preservatives of any kind.

Description
What is pearl powder?
Pearl powder is a finely ground powder made from whole saltwater or freshwater pearls, valued for over 1,600 years in Traditional Chinese Medicine and in skincare around the world. Known in Chinese as Zhen Zhu Fen, it is used as a daily food supplement, a natural skincare ingredient and a gentle tooth polish.
Weluxia Pearl Powder is single origin, made from Japanese saltwater pearls (Pinctada sp.), levigated by hand in water to an average particle size of 1 to 1.3 microns. It is food grade, has one single ingredient, and contains no fillers, carriers, anti caking agents or preservatives. Each 60g jar holds about 30 daily servings and is packed in the UK.
What is pearl powder made of?
- Calcium carbonate (aragonite): the mineral that makes up most of a pearl's nacre, making pearl powder a natural source of calcium.
- Conchiolin: the natural protein that binds the layers of nacre together.
- Amino acids: including glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, 18 in total.
- Trace minerals: more than 30, including magnesium, zinc and selenium.
Our pearl powder is 100% levigated Japanese saltwater pearl. Nothing is added and nothing is extracted.
Pearl powder benefits and uses
For skin and beauty
- A bright, even complexion: pearl has been used in Chinese beauty rituals since the Northern Song Dynasty to bring radiance to the skin. Laboratory research has also looked at how conchiolin interacts with tyrosinase, the enzyme involved in skin pigmentation.
- A soft, luminous finish: the ultra fine levigated powder works as a natural mineral setting powder and subtle highlighter.
- Gentle polishing: with a Mohs hardness of 3 to 3.5, pearl is far softer than silica, so it polishes skin without harsh abrasion.
For teeth
- Natural source of calcium: calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal teeth and bones.
- Surface stain removal: gently lifts staining from coffee, tea and tannins through soft mechanical polishing, with no bleaching agents.
- Gentle on enamel: with a Mohs hardness of 3 to 3.5, pearl is softer than tooth enamel (around 5) and far softer than silica (7), making it suitable for daily brushing alongside a remineralising tooth powder.
For calm and evening rituals
- A traditional Shen tonic: in Traditional Chinese Medicine, pearl powder is classified as a Shen tonic, traditionally taken in the evening to calm the spirit and support restful sleep.
How to take pearl powder
As a daily supplement
Pearl powder is a hard mineral, so it needs an acidic environment to dissolve. Stir half a teaspoon (about 2g) once a day into warm lemon water or water with a little diluted apple cider vinegar, or take it with a meal. Avoid milky drinks, which make it harder for the mineral to dissolve.
For teeth
Add a small pinch to a dry toothbrush and brush gently for two minutes, or blend with one of our remineralising tooth powders.
For skin
Blend with honey, aloe vera or a facial oil to make a mask, leave for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse. You can also dust it lightly over moisturiser as a luminous finishing powder.
What is Zhen Zhu Fen?
Zhen Zhu Fen (珍珠粉) is the traditional Chinese name for pearl powder, recorded in classical Chinese pharmacy texts for over 1,600 years. The name translates as precious pearl powder. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is classified as a Shen tonic, used to calm the spirit, support restful sleep and brighten the complexion. The classical preparation is shui fei fa, the water flying method, which is levigation. Genuine Zhen Zhu Fen is levigated, food grade and made from whole pearl nacre, not hydrolysed or chemically processed.
What is the difference between saltwater and freshwater pearl powder?
Most pearl powder sold in the UK and US is made from freshwater pearls farmed in lakes and rivers, mainly in China. A single freshwater mussel can produce up to 50 pearls at once, which keeps supply high and cost low. That is why freshwater pearl is the industry default.
Saltwater pearls grow in oysters in the open ocean, building their nacre slowly over one to two years in mineral rich seawater. Japanese saltwater pearl oysters, cultivated in protected coastal waters, produce one pearl at a time. The result is denser nacre, with more conchiolin and a richer trace mineral profile per gram.
What does levigated pearl powder mean?
Levigation is the traditional water grinding method used in classical Chinese pharmacy. Pearl is ground in purified water, the finest particles stay suspended while coarser material sinks and is removed, and the process is repeated, sometimes for 24 to 48 hours, until every particle is consistently fine. The powder is then dried at a low temperature.
The result is an average particle size of 1 to 1.3 microns. A human hair is about 70 microns wide, so each particle is roughly 50 times smaller. Levigation is slow and labour intensive, which is why most brands skip it.

Pearl powder precautions: is it safe?
Pearl powder is safe for most people when it is food grade and tested for heavy metals. Pearl comes from molluscs, so avoid it if you have a shellfish or mollusc allergy unless your doctor agrees. If you take other calcium supplements, keep an eye on your total daily calcium. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication, speak to your doctor before use.
Food supplement. Do not exceed the suggested daily amount. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Keep out of reach of young children. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication, speak to your doctor before use. This information is not medical advice.

Food grade levigated pearl powder is suitable to take as a food supplement when it is sourced carefully and tested for heavy metals. Good quality pearl powder is independently tested for lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by an accredited laboratory. Check that any pearl powder you buy is labelled food grade and has been tested before taking it. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication, speak to your doctor first.
Pearl powder gently polishes teeth and lifts surface staining from coffee, tea and tannins through mild mechanical action rather than chemical bleaching. Its Mohs hardness of around 3 to 3.5 is softer than baking soda, so it is gentle on enamel. It is also a natural source of calcium, which is needed for the maintenance of normal teeth.
The typical suggested amount is half a teaspoon, roughly 2 grams, once a day. It is usually mixed into water, juice or a smoothie and taken with a meal or shortly after breakfast. Do not exceed the suggested daily amount.

Levigated pearl powder is ground slowly in water using the traditional method into particles averaging 1 to 1.3 microns, roughly 50 times finer than a human hair. This gives a silky, grit free texture that mixes smoothly into drinks and skincare, unlike standard ground pearl powder, which is usually coarser.
