What is pearl powder?

Pearl powder is a finely milled supplement and cosmetic ingredient derived from the nacre of saltwater or freshwater oysters. Treasured for over 1,600 years in traditional Chinese medicine as Zhen Zhu Fen, it is valued today for its bioavailable calcium, 18 amino acids, conchiolin protein, and 30+ trace minerals. It is used to support collagen production, brighten skin, remineralise tooth enamel, and provide gentle mineral nourishment. Quality depends entirely on source and processing levigated Japanese Akoya saltwater pearl delivers significantly greater mineral density and bioavailability than standard freshwater alternatives.

What does pearl powder do?

For skin and beauty

  • Skin brightening: Conchiolin, the organic protein unique to pearl nacre, inhibits tyrosinase the enzyme responsible for melanin production  reducing dark spots and uneven pigmentation over time.
  • Collagen support: The 18 amino acids in pearl powder, particularly glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, provide the building blocks the body uses to synthesise collagen, supporting skin elasticity and reducing visible signs of ageing.
  • Radiance and finish: Ultra-fine levigated pearl powder functions as a natural mineral setting powder and subtle highlighter, giving skin a smooth, light-reflecting finish.
  • Gentle exfoliation: With a Mohs hardness of 3 to 3.5 far softer than charcoal or silica it polishes skin and lifts surface staining without abrasion or sensitivity.

For teeth and enamel

  • Remineralisation: The aragonite calcium carbonate in pearl nacre is structurally similar to hydroxyapatite in tooth enamel. Applied during brushing, it provides bioavailable calcium directly at the enamel surface to support remineralisation and replenish minerals lost through acid erosion.
  • Stain removal: Lifts surface staining from coffee, tea, and tannins through gentle mechanical polishing  no bleaching agents, no sensitivity, no disruption to the oral microbiome.
  • Oral pH balance: Natural alkalinity helps neutralise acids produced by oral bacteria, supporting a healthier oral environment over time.

For sleep and nervous system support

  • Shen tonic: In traditional Chinese medicine, pearl powder is classified as a Shen tonic — used to calm the nervous system, ease an overactive mind, and support restful sleep.
  • Mineral support: Magnesium and glycine in pearl nacre both have documented roles in nervous system regulation. Taken as an evening supplement in warm water or herbal tea, it has been used for centuries as a gentle aid to mental calm and sleep quality.

For hair and nails

  • The calcium and trace mineral density of saltwater pearl supports structural proteins throughout the body. Many customers report improvements in nail strength and hair condition within 6 to 8 weeks of consistent daily use.

What is Zhen Zhu Fen?

Zhen Zhu Fen (珍珠粉) is the traditional Chinese name for levigated pearl powder, documented in classical Chinese pharmacy texts for over 1,600 years. The name translates directly as precious pearl powder. In traditional Chinese medicine it is classified as a Shen tonic used to calm the spirit, support restful sleep, and brighten the complexion. The preparation method described in classical texts is the shui fei fa (water flying method) — which is levigation. Genuine Zhen Zhu Fen is always levigated, always food grade, and always derived from whole pearl nacre  not hydrolysed or chemically processed. Weluxia applies this same traditional method to Japanese Akoya saltwater pearl.

What is the difference between saltwater and freshwater pearl powder?

The vast majority of pearl powder sold in the UK and US is derived from freshwater pearls farmed in lakes and rivers, predominantly in China. A single freshwater mussel can produce up to 50 pearls simultaneously, which makes the supply abundant and the cost low. This is why freshwater pearl is the industry default not because it is superior, but because it is economical.

Saltwater pearls are fundamentally different. They grow in oysters living in the open ocean, building their nacre slowly over years in mineral-rich seawater. Japanese Akoya oysters, cultivated in protected coastal waters, produce one pearl at a time. The result is a denser nacre, a higher concentration of conchiolin protein, and a richer trace mineral profile per gram than any freshwater equivalent can match.

For a food supplement, this difference is not cosmetic it is functional. More nacre density per gram means more active nutrition per serving.

What does levigated pearl powder mean?

Levigation is a traditional water-grinding process rooted in classical Chinese pharmacy. Pearl is placed in purified water and ground repeatedly in a circular motion. The finest particles remain suspended in the water while heavier, coarser material sinks to the bottom and is discarded. Fresh water is added and the process repeats sometimes for 24 to 48 continuous hours until every particle in suspension is of consistent, ultra-fine fineness. The suspended powder is then dried at low temperature to preserve its active compounds.

The result is an average particle size of 1 to 1.3 microns. To put that in context, a human hair is approximately 70 microns in diameter. Weluxia pearl powder particles are roughly 50 times smaller.

Most brands skip levigation entirely. It is slow, labour intensive, and cannot be scaled cheaply. It is also the single most important factor that separates pearl powder that works from pearl powder that does not.

Does pearl powder work for teeth and enamel remineralisation?

Yes. Applied topically, levigated pearl powder acts as a gentle, mineral-rich polish for the teeth. Its Mohs hardness of approximately 3 to 3.5 places it considerably softer than baking soda and far gentler than activated charcoal, making it safe for daily use without any risk to enamel integrity.

The aragonite calcium carbonate in pearl nacre is structurally similar to the hydroxyapatite that makes up human tooth enamel. Applied at the enamel surface during brushing, it provides a bioavailable source of calcium that supports remineralisation and helps replenish minerals lost through acid erosion. Its natural alkalinity also helps neutralise the acids produced by oral bacteria, supporting a healthier oral pH environment over time.

Pearl powder lifts surface staining from coffee, tea, and tannins through gentle mechanical polishing no bleaching agents, no sensitivity, no disruption to the oral microbiome. For best results, add a small pinch to a dry toothbrush, or blend a small amount with any Weluxia remineralising tooth powder to supercharge your enamel support routine.

What does pearl powder do for skin, hair and nails?

Pearl powder has been used as a topical skin ingredient since the Northern Song Dynasty (960 to 1127 AD). Modern dermatological research has identified several mechanisms that align closely with this centuries-old tradition.

Conchiolin, the organic protein matrix unique to mollusc nacre, has been shown in research to inhibit tyrosinase the enzyme responsible for melanin production. This provides a biological basis for pearl powder's long-standing use as a skin brightening agent and its ability to reduce the appearance of dark spots and uneven pigmentation over time.

The 18 amino acids in pearl powder, particularly glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, provide the raw material the body uses to synthesise collagen. Consistent supplementation supports skin elasticity and structural integrity from within. The selenium and trace minerals in saltwater pearl act as cofactors for antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase, one of the body's most important defences against oxidative stress and visible skin ageing.

Topical use: Blend a small amount with honey, aloe vera, or a light facial oil to create a brightening face mask. Leave for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing. The ultra-fine particle size gives it a smooth, light-reflecting finish that also works well as a natural finishing powder over moisturiser.

How do you take pearl powder?

As a daily supplement

Mix half a teaspoon (approximately 2g) into warm water, lemon water, a smoothie, or herbal tea once daily. Pearl powder is most effectively absorbed in an acidic environment pairing it with a source of vitamin C such as lemon juice or orange juice can further enhance bioavailability. It will not fully dissolve and will settle if left to stand. Stir and drink immediately.

For teeth

Add a small pinch to a dry toothbrush and brush gently for two minutes, or blend with a Weluxia remineralising tooth powder for a combined mineral treatment.

For skin

Blend with honey, aloe vera, or facial oil as a mask, or dust lightly over moisturiser as a luminising finishing powder.

Zhen Zhu Fen is the traditional Chinese name for levigated pearl powder, documented in classical pharmacy texts for over 1,600 years. In traditional Chinese medicine it is classified as a Shen tonic used to calm the spirit, support restful sleep, and brighten the complexion. The classical preparation method is the shui fei fa or water flying method, which is levigation.

Freshwater pearls are mass farmed, with a single mussel producing up to 50 pearls at once, making them cheap and the industry default. Saltwater pearls grow one at a time in open ocean oysters over one to two years, producing denser nacre, more conchiolin protein, and a richer trace mineral profile per gram than freshwater alternatives.

Mix half a teaspoon into warm water, lemon juice, or a smoothie once daily, ideally with something acidic to improve absorption. For teeth, add a small pinch to a dry toothbrush or blend it with a remineralising tooth powder. For skin, combine with honey or facial oil as a brightening mask and leave for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing.

Food grade levigated pearl powder is safe to consume when sourced correctly and tested for heavy metals. Reputable pearl powder is independently tested for lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury by an accredited laboratory. Always check that the product specifies food grade status and publishes third party test results before consuming any pearl powder supplement.

Pearl powder gently polishes teeth and lifts surface staining from coffee, tea, and tannins through mild mechanical action rather than chemical bleaching. Its Mohs hardness of around 3 to 3.5 is much softer than baking soda, so it will not damage enamel. It also delivers bioavailable calcium that supports natural remineralisation and brightness over time.

The typical suggested daily amount is half a teaspoon, roughly 2 grams, taken once per day. This is usually mixed into water, juice, or a smoothie and consumed with a meal or shortly after breakfast. Consistent daily use over 6 to 8 weeks is generally recommended before expecting visible results in skin, hair, or nails.

Pearl powder contains conchiolin, a protein that inhibits melanin producing enzymes, helping to brighten skin and reduce the appearance of dark spots over time. Its 18 amino acids support the body's natural collagen production, aiding elasticity. The ultra fine texture also gives skin a smooth, light reflecting finish when used as a mask or setting powder.

In traditional Chinese medicine, pearl powder is classified as a Shen tonic, historically used to calm the nervous system and support restful sleep. It contains magnesium and glycine, both of which have documented roles in nervous system regulation. Taken as an evening supplement in warm water or herbal tea, it has been used this way for centuries.

Levigated pearl powder is ground through a slow, traditional water milling process into particles averaging 1 to 1.3 microns, roughly 50 times finer than a human hair. This ultra fine texture allows for far greater bioavailability and a smoother, less gritty texture than standard ground pearl powder, which is typically coarser and harder to absorb.
