Is Tooth Soap Safe? Everything You Need to Know

By the Weluxia Team · Published March 2026 · 6 min read

Is tooth soap safe to use? It is one of the most common questions we get asked at Weluxia. People are curious, but they are also cautious. Will it harm your enamel? Is it safe for children? Is it safe for sensitive teeth? These are all completely reasonable questions and this article answers all of them honestly — including where the evidence is strong and where it is more limited.

New to tooth soap entirely? Start with our guide: What Is Tooth Soap?

Is tooth soap safe to use?

Yes, tooth soap made from saponified plant oils is safe for daily use for most people. The key distinction is between tooth soap — which is made specifically for oral use from food grade plant oils — and regular bar soap, which is made for skin and should never go in your mouth.

Weluxia Tooth Soap Drops are made from saponified olive oil, saponified coconut oil, distilled water, and natural essential oil. Every ingredient is food grade and selected specifically because it is safe if trace amounts are swallowed during brushing. There are no synthetic detergents, no artificial preservatives, and no harsh chemicals in the formula.

What does the research say?

The science on tooth soap is still developing compared to the decades of research behind fluoride toothpaste, and it is important to be honest about that. Saponified plant oils have known surfactant and antimicrobial properties — the mechanism by which they lift debris and residues from tooth surfaces is well understood. However, tooth soap does not contain fluoride or hydroxyapatite, which are the most clinically proven ingredients for remineralising enamel and preventing cavities.

If you have a high cavity risk or active tooth decay, it is worth speaking to your dentist before switching to tooth soap as your sole oral care product.

Is tooth soap safe for children?

Yes, with appropriate supervision. Because Weluxia Tooth Soap contains no fluoride, there is no risk of fluorosis from accidental swallowing — which is a genuine concern with fluoride toothpaste in young children. The plant based ingredients are non toxic and safe if small amounts are ingested during brushing.

For children under three years old, always supervise brushing and use only a tiny amount. If you have specific concerns about your child's dental health, speak with your dentist before switching.

Is tooth soap safe for sensitive teeth?

Generally yes. Tooth soap contains no SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate), which is the foaming agent in most conventional toothpastes and a common trigger for tooth sensitivity and mouth ulcers. Many people who switch to tooth soap report reduced sensitivity, largely because of the absence of SLS and other synthetic irritants.

That said, if your sensitivity is caused by enamel erosion or exposed dentine, tooth soap alone may not be sufficient. In those cases, pairing tooth soap with a remineralising product such as our hydroxyapatite tooth powder would give your teeth more comprehensive support. We have written a dedicated guide to this: Tooth Soap for Sensitive Teeth and Gums.

Is tooth soap safe for people with allergies?

This depends on the specific formula. Weluxia Tooth Soap is made from saponified olive oil and saponified coconut oil. If you have a known allergy to either of these ingredients, check the full ingredient list before use. Our Peppermint and Cinnamon variants both use pure essential oils, so if you have sensitivities to either of those, choose accordingly.

If you are unsure, apply a tiny amount to the inside of your lip and wait 24 hours before using it as part of your full brushing routine.

Will tooth soap damage my enamel?

This is one of the most common concerns and a fair one. The answer depends on the abrasivity of the formula. Dental abrasivity is measured on a scale called RDA (Relative Dentin Abrasivity). Anything under 70 is considered low abrasion and safe for daily use.

Weluxia Tooth Soap Drops have a very low abrasivity because they contain no calcium carbonate, silica, or other abrasive polishing agents. They clean primarily through the surfactant action of the saponified oils, not through physical scrubbing. This makes them one of the gentlest options available for daily oral care.

Who should be cautious about using tooth soap?

Tooth soap is suitable for most people, but there are some situations where extra care is warranted:

  • People with active cavities. Tooth soap does not remineralise enamel. If you have active decay, speak to your dentist before stopping fluoride or hydroxyapatite based products.
  • People with dry mouth (xerostomia). Saliva is essential for oral health. If you have chronic dry mouth, a more mineral rich oral care routine may serve you better alongside tooth soap.
  • People with known oil allergies. Always check the ingredient list if you have allergies to olive or coconut derived ingredients.

The bottom line

Tooth soap made from food grade saponified plant oils is safe for daily use for the vast majority of people. It is free from synthetic chemicals, non toxic, gentle on gums, and a legitimate alternative to conventional toothpaste for those seeking a cleaner, more natural oral care routine.

As with any change to your oral health routine, if you have existing dental concerns it is always worth a conversation with your dentist first.
